Griffin, Frome

Situated in the part of Frome known as Trinity or Chinatown, the Griffin is the brewery tap for the Milk Street brewery, situated at the back of the pub in what was, many years ago, a delightfully seedy blue cinema.

A wide range of ales is produced along with seasonal beers and specials. We sampled Redtail Citra by the Red Squirrel Brewing from Hertfordshire, before we started on the Milk Street ales. With no Zig-Zag (stout) available, the Funky Monkey (bitter), Elder Fizz (blonde) and Winter Spice (porter). All were very good, but the Elder Fizz has to go down as one of the best beers we've tried in some time.

The single bar retains some original features such as etched windows and wooden floor and a stained glass Griffin behind the bar. The small garden is open all year but food is limited to summer BBQ, Sunday lunches and World Food night on Wednesdays.

We sometimes frown upon returning to pubs we have already visited, but a Saturday visit to the Griffin must be on the cards next season, should Frome Town not get relegated.
